Aunt Yvonne & Uncle Bill with 'Tommy'

No one in the world calls me Tommy, except my beloved aunts. That's ok. Here I am, on the day I was getting baptized (May 1952). The picture was taken at 29 Hillcrest Rd. in Latham, where my folks lived for many years. Yvonne and Bill would be married later that year.

What a crystal clear photo! I think I can even make out the picture in the frame on top of the TV set. I have seen that one before!

That TV was the first TV that we ever owned and I remember when it was delivered, just before Tom was born. There wasn't much programming on in those days, but one show I remember was Howdy Doody and I remember suggesting to my Mom that we name Tom, Howdy Doody.

That TV was the first TV that we ever owned, a 17 inch GE. I remember when it was delivered, just before Tom was born. There wasn't much programming on in those days, but one show I watched all the time was Howdy Doody and I remember suggesting to my Mom that we name Tom, Howdy Doody. She declined, sorry Tom.

I wonder how close I really came to being named Howdy Doody. I see lots of things in the photo that I recall as a kid. The strange piece of driftwood (on the mantle) and the bronze kid peeing (on the sill of the frosted window). I took that thing to grade school and showed it off to my friends. I thought it was real naughty. The bookshelves were not yet full of books to never look at. :-)

Oh thank goodness you weren't named Howdy Doody - what would it be like when we tell all our friends some of the beautiful family stories and then start telling a story about "and then, my cousin, Howdy Doody..." - no longer would the family sound so admirable - strange maybe, but not admirable - oh, wait a minute, that is what makes us so special - we can be strange and crazy - Hey Howdy - how's it going - I like it after all - ha ha -
